Dear Ames Families,

We are very excited to announce the launch of One Book, One School, an all-school book club that will take place over the course of the next several weeks. In the upcoming days, the oldest child of each Ames family will receive a copy of the same book, “Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White. Ames students will be asked to read one section of the book per night at home aloud with their family. The following day there will be a trivia question about the previous night’s reading. In general, the sections are not too long, and the questions will be easy enough for those who are attentive and engaged in the book.

This program, by encouraging reading aloud, prepares your child to be an effective reader, sparks conversations, increases learning comprehension, helps build vocabularies, and fosters positive feelings about reading and writing. It will also be fun!! In addition to the daily trivia questions, there will be weekly drawings for fun prizes, a school spirit week based on the book, and an end of program celebration!

Click here to access a fantastic website with a calendar to follow along daily made by the Ames teaching staff. If your child reads ahead or falls behind a day or two, no worries. But try to keep up with the schedule so that they are aligned with everyone else and can participate in the daily trivia questions. On the website you will also find audio links to each section of the book read by an Ames teacher. So, if you and your child prefer to listen to the book, you will be enjoying our wonderful Ames staff reading to you.

“Charlotte’s Web” is the classic tale of an innocent young pig – and the devoted friend who changes his life.  It is a story of friendship, courage, and self-sacrifice.

We hope you enjoy “Charlotte’s Web”!

The Ames PTA and Ames Staff
