Readers R Leaders

New Reading Incentive Program for 2009/2010

Hello to all! This year we are happy and excited to introduce an entirely new reading incentive program for the Ames Student Community. The Readers R Leaders program will have some of the elements of our old program but with new incentives (nothing against pizza, but no more pizza!). We hope it encourages our kids to read more than they already do, and that it fosters a long-lasting love of reading.

Here is how it will work:

Attached is a calendar for the month of October. A sheet like this will be available on EBackpack every month. There are two items listed on each day. The students will put a check on the first line if they complete the required 20 minutes a day of reading time. That’s their personal goal. The second line is for the students to track extra minutes, beyond the 20 required, that they read each day. We’ll track all minutes read by all the students because they count towards the school goal. Each student will turn in the form monthly and we will track the results.

Here is the really exciting part:

There will be fun incentives for meeting the personal goals, as well as an awesome incentive for meeting the school goal!!  If your student meets the personal goal of 20 minutes a day and turns in his/her sheets for BOTH October and for November, he/she will be invited to a Build-Your-Own-Sundae Ice Cream Party in December! All forms should be completed by the student, signed by a parent, and turned in by the deadline listed. After December we will be announcing our January/February personal incentive, and be assured it will be great!  The Readers R Leaders program also includes an incentive for meeting the school goal.  If our students collectively read for a million minutes by the end of April, they will earn Dunk Tank Day in May! On Dunk Tank Day, our very awesome Ames teachers will sit in the tank. The kids can earn balls to dunk the teachers by completing their personal goal for the months of March and April. Throughout the school year, we will be tracking and posting progress towards the school goal, so please be sure to help us keep your kids excited and motivated.

Parents, I ask that you review the new program with your child and really impress on him/her that reading 20 minutes a day should be easy because it is already a personal goal for school; and that the extra minutes are where they can really make an impact in earning the Dunk Tank Day! The teachers will also be discussing the program in the classroom. We will be communicating throughout the year on our progress and incentives. Good luck and let’s go read because Readers R Leaders!!!!
