Spirit Wear Has Arrived

Thank you to everyone that supported our Spirit Wear sale.  We sold almost 300 items with tie-dye being the most popular by far.  Items are being delivered to school on Monday so watch backpacks this week for your order.  If you have any questions once you receive your order, please contact Erin Ahern at erinahern11@gmail.com.  Thank you to Erin for being the chairperson of this fun program and to Graphic Screen Printing for the new designs and items.

Library Volunteers Needed

We need volunteers for our Kindergarten through 3rd grade classes to read aloud stories and to assist students in finding books. This is a great opportunity to volunteer with your student’s class and the students love having guest readers. Please sign up to volunteer at https://signup.com/go/VXdGiYX . Additionally, we are looking for a few regular volunteers to assist with re-shelving books. If this something you are interested in, please contact Debbie Kummer at 708-263-7646 or deb.kummer@sbcglobal.net.

The PTA is responsible for a large amount of the programs that take place at Ames.  These can’t be done without our families volunteering.  There are opportunities for everyone. Some are at school activities and some that can be done completely from home.  We need everyone to play a part in order to keep these programs going.  Please review the list from the link and sign up for any areas that are of interest to you.  Signing up does not commit you.  It just means that the committee chair with contact you to discuss what is involved and what you can do to help.  Again, we need everyone’s help so please find some spots that are of interest to you.  https://signup.com/go/BgSQEWS

Science in a Bag 2019

Science in a Bag

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Science in a Bag program is about to begin at Ames School. The program is an excellent opportunity for children and parents to interact academically and increase your child’s scientific literacy. Take the time to enjoy this positive learning experience in the comfort of your home and encourage your child’s natural curiosity about the world and its wonders. Each experiment explores a different scientific focus such as Chemistry or Physics. These experiments can help your child start thinking about the District 96 Winter Science Fair and the Ames Spring Science Fair. This is an optional program and separate from the Science Fairs. Here is how the program will work:

● Starting Thursday September 26, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be able to check out a science experiment in a bag after turning in the science in a bag 2019.pdf signed permission slip. Inside each bag are 1) experiment instructions, 2) a worksheet to be completed by the student and signed by you and 3) some items needed that are not usually found at home. You will provide a few consumable items needed for the experiment.

● Parent volunteers will sign out experiment bags in the Library before school (8:00-8:10am) Thursdays for 4 weeks and a makeup week (Sep 26, Oct 3, 10, 17, 24).

● The bag, non-consumable items provided and the completed worksheet must be returned by the following Tuesday in the class bins located in the main hallway outside the Library. This is very important as supplies are limited and re-used by another student.

There are no right or wrong answers to the experiments and although they all have been previously tested sometimes they don’t work (there are many variables). The goal is completion, working through the scientific method (problem, hypothesis, experiment, observation, and conclusion), parent-child interaction and having FUN with science! There are a total of 4 experiments to be completed and upon completion of all 4 your student will be recognized for this achievement. Thanks in advance to all parent volunteers helping this program! If you have any questions, please contact me at K8banner@yahoo.com and have fun!

The Ames Little Free Library is in!

Posted Sep 13, 2019 | Category: Informational

The Ames Reading Circle has come full circle. The Ames PTA voted at the end of last school year to gift the school and community a Little Free Library to encourage reading for all ages. Little Free Library is the largest grassroots book-sharing network in the world that inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges. Stop by the reading circle to check it out this week. Please feel free to add or take books.

Many thanks to Dan Tabb for his beautiful workmanship in building and installing it and to Patty Romero for collecting books to help get it started.

Raptor for Parent Volunteers

Posted Sep 6, 2019 | Category: Informational
Good Afternoon Ames Families-

Last year we implemented Raptor at the end of the school year for parent volunteers.

We are going to be using Raptor again this school year.  I want to share the following information with any parent groups/volunteers at Ames.

Please visit   https://www.district96.org/apps/pages/volunteer  or   http://bit.ly/raptor96  if you are planning on volunteering at Ames Elementary School this school year.

There are two levels of volunteers. The levels associated with each volunteer function are based on being under the direct supervision of District 96 staff.

  • A Level 1 Volunteer is always under the supervision of District 96 staff and will be requested to complete an online application to complete a background check using the national sex offender database.

    • Level 1 at Ames include the following volunteer opportunities
      • Fun Lunch
      • Mystery Readers
      • Library Volunteers
      • Classroom Volunteers
      • Classroom Parties (includes Field Day)
      • Talent Show Auditions
      • Science in a Bag
      • Book Fair
  • A Level 2 Volunteer may not be under the direct supervision of District 96 staff and will be requested to complete an online application and submit their Social Security Number to complete a criminal background check (including the National Criminal Database and National Sex Offender Database).

    • Level 2 at Ames include the following volunteer opportunities
      • Junior Great Books
      • Field Trips

Once you choose how you are volunteering, the system will prompt you on what information you need to provide.

Thank you and let me know if you have any questions.
